The crop milk should be prepared with hot water in sufficient quantity to achieve a creamy texture (about 25% concentration). The concentration should be continuously increased as of Day One. A very low -concentration milk should be provided at the first feed after hatching (approximately 5%); for each of the following feeds the concentration should gradually be increased until it reaches the recommended level. These recommendations are approximate, as each species requires its own specific hand-rearing protocol. With newborns it is important to supply the milk at a temperature as close as possible to the bird’s body temperature (39ºC), but without exceeding it, in order to avoid burning the crop.
