Bats are the ONLY flying mammals. The forelimbs of bats are webbed and developed as wings, but they do not flap their entire forelimbs, as birds do, but instead flap their spread out digits, which are very long and covered with a thin membrane. We generally only see two species of Bat during the course of our work though there are many more British Bats, in fact there are 18, those that we have worked with are pictured below:-
Bats - Pipistrelle
This Pipistrelle awoke from hiberantion in April but was too weak to look for food. He was fed, gained weight and was released. This Pipistrelle tried to hibernate in a school and was found in December. He is enjoying a tasty mealworm here.

Bats - Brown Long Eared

This Brown Long Eared Bat was attacked by a cat and sustained a fracture to its forearm.
